Awards Gala, Structural Design and Delivery
For the Dubai World Cup Awards Gala Dinner, we were challenged to design and construct a temporary event venue on a lake – ensuring maximum stability with minimum visibility of supporting infrastructure.
Before we could start on the main structure, over 4,000m2 of the lake had to be decked out with structural scaffolding to create a level platform on which to create the temporary environment. Specialist Divers were brought onto the team at the planning stage to ensure this was all achieved safely and efficiently.
For the temporary structure we utilised the largest clear-span temporary structure available in the region at the time; with a 40m clear span. With the flexibility of the clear area we created a bespoke, opulent reception area with views out across the lake and landscaping. The reception was separate to the performance space where the 9m clear ceiling height and impressive load-bearing capacity of the structure allowed us to stage an immersive theatrical production, with flown walling, aerial artistes and projection mapping.
We built a scaffold platform with a nine-metre high framework, mounted with tracking perimeter walls. These moving walls could black out spaces for performances or reveal views over the lake.
